The Bar Standards Board (BSB) has responsibility for dealing with complaints when there have been concerns raised about the conduct of a barrister’s, or another person regulated by this body. The BSB investigations take place over four stages:
- Stage 1: an initial assessment is carried out of what rules may have been broken, whether there is anything to prevent a fair investigation being carried out, and to establish if the complaint is serious enough to warrant further investigation.
- Stage 2: a formal investigation is undertaken with the BSB providing a summary of the complaint issues and any supporting evidence for a response.
- Stage 3: a decision will be made as to whether BSB staff can deal with the complaint or whether this requires to be forwarded to the Professional Conduct Committee for a decision.
- Stage 4: a decision will be made either with your consent if the facts are not disputed, or by the Professional Conduct Committee.
