The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) place responsibilities upon individuals and companies who own and operate work equipment, and creates duties for employers whose businesses use such equipment regardless of whether or not these are owned by them. PUWER requires that any equipment provided for use at work is suitable for its intended use, is safe for this use and maintained in such a way as to ensure this through regular inspections, and is correctly installed. Work equipment must only be used by individuals who have appropriate information, instruction and training. Equipment must be accompanied by suitable health and safety measures, which may include protective devices such as emergency stop switches and warning markings, and used in accordance with any special operational requirements.
