Since October 2006, companies in England and Wales have been required to carry out risk assessments to ensure they comply with fire safety regulations as a consequence of the provisions found in the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. These should take the same general approach to health and safety risk assessments and be kept up to date, with appropriate safety measures put in place based on these findings. For the majority of commercial premises, responsibility for enforcing the law in relation to fire safety is held by local fire and rescue authorities. In relation to construction sites, responsibility for this is held by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which also oversees fire safety for ships undergoing construction or repair and for nuclear premises.
